Tribute to HRH Queen Elizabeth II

Queen Elizabeth II ascended to the throne on 6th February 1952 following the death of her father, King George VI. Her Coronation took place on 2nd June 1953. Diamond Jubilee in Carterton

The Jubilee Queen was chosen last evening in the Mayor’s Parlour. The successful entrant was Magan Whitehead. All of the entrants were absolutely brilliant and the judging (which I chaired) was therefore really difficult, but Megan can be especially proud to have been crowned our Jubilee Queen in Carterton. Carterton – local heritage

Although Carterton only came into existence in 1900, there may well have been earlier settlements on the site. Bronze Age flint tools found in the area and a round barrow (now levelled) between the present Brize Norton and Black Bourton Roads, suggests that there may have been an Iron Age settlement near the town centre
