224 people will fight for 168 seats in May
MAY’S election is hotting up, with 224 people standing for 168 seats on parish, town and district councils across West Oxfordshire.
But Carterton Town Council is almost a foregone conclusion, with only one of the five wards having more candidates than seats. It means mayor Norman MacRae, deputy mayor Adrian Coomber, and 11 others have already won their seats.
Sir — I read with interest comments from Richard Anstis, planning adviser to Alvescot Parish Council, who said that for Carterton Town Council “to put a finger in the air and randomly decide to back one of the sites under discussion, without giving the various options proper consideration, and without even having seen the results of this consultation, makes the members look prejudiced and irresponsible”.
Nothing could be further from the truth.
The town council has received presentations from each of the developers and has carried out its own public consultation to ensure that each site option was given proper consideration.
The result of many months of deliberation was reported at the January council meeting, and the issues were discussed in open forum. The council decided on its preferred option to the west of the town on grounds of long-term sustainability and on reducing the impact on neighbouring parishes.
Residents of Carterton and the surrounding villages will be able to see details of both the east and west proposals at an exhibition being held on February 15 at Carterton Community Centre, between 5pm and 9pm.
I hope that all those who can visit will do so, and that they will state their preference for the future development of the town.
Councillor Adrian Coomber, Carterton Town Council
Carterton deputy mayor, Adrian Coomber, said: “At the moment, based on the information that we have been provided by the developers, we think that the west option seems to have the most things in its favour, partly because it impinges less on the villages.
“The east option would close the gap between Carterton and Brize Norton village, which we thought was a bad thing — and there was a lot of opposition from Brize Norton village.”
