There are 16 Councillors representing five wards within the town. These Councillors are elected every four years. The most recent elections were held in May 2011. The Mayor, Deputy Mayor and Chairmen of the various sub-committees are elected annually.
I represent the citizens of Carterton on the Town Council, and I speak on their behalf. The following standing committees and working groups work hard for the benefit of the town.
Administration
The administration committee considers the business of the council including the budget and how public money is shared amongst various budget heads.
Recreation
The Recreation Committee discusses matters relating to play parks, open spaces, football pitches and flower beds etc. I chaired this committee since the summer of 2008 and handed it to my Deputy Mayor in 2012.
Remembrance Observance
As a serving member of the Royal Air Force as well as a town councillor; Remembrance is very dear to my family and I. Each year we attend a church service at St John’s followed by a ceremony at the war memorial where wreaths and crosses are laid. I am one of two councillors responsible for the arrangements to ensure that everything is conducted correctly and respectfully.
Policy
The Policy Committee considers the long term development of the town and includes the development of the town centre, development of industrial and retail sites, fire station, Sixth Form College, land purchases and so forth.
