The Youth council is made up of members of the community representing Carterton Community College and several other youth organisations. All Youth Councillors are between 13 and 18 years old. Meetings are held in Carterton Town hall. The Youth Council enables Young people in Carterton to have their say and gives them the opportunity to be fully involved in what happens in the town in which they live. Since the Youth Council began in 2007 it has been very active and very effective, receiving words of praise throughout the town and even from the Prime Minister!
All Members of the Youth Council share in groups a Mentor. Some of the Mentors are serving Town Councillor Mentors who have experience in working on and with councils and organisations and are there for advice to the Youth Councillors. There are a total of three Town Councillor Mentors who all work extremely well with the Youth Councillors. We are also fortunate to have a number of Community Mentors to assist the Youth Council. At least one Town Councillor Mentor has to be present at all Youth Council meetings. I believe in our Young people and I am fully committed to providing opportunities for them to further their personal development through team building, leadership, researching, debating, public speaking etc. and in turn I hope to bridge the generation gap and promote a more respectful and responsible society.
